Hi Mark. I have a question that only a new player to poker would probably ask. I hope it's not too stupid. It has to page on hand rankings. Here is goes.
I am unsure about a statement made in this article about 3 of a kind. The article talks about breaking a tie between two players who each have 3 of a kind. Specifically it talks about how to break a tiw between two players who have the same 3 of a kind. The example that it gives is both players having three 8s. My question is: How is this possible? Shouldn't there only be four 8s in a deck? But, if each player has three 8s, that would mean that there are six 8s in the deck. If there was to be a tie between two players who each had the same 3 of a kind, that would mean that there would be six of the card in question (ex. six 8s, or six Jacks, etc).
Is the article talking about games in which more than one deck is used? i guess it's possible for two players to be tied with the same 3 of a kind in that situation. But can poker be played with more than one deck? I'm not sure. If I'm missing something, then please ignore my post and attribute my ignorance to the fact that I'm new to poker. If not, it would seem that this article should be edited.
P.S. The point about full houses seems to have the same problem. How can there be a tie between full houses? That would mean that there are six cards of a certain kind in the deck.
Thank in advance for the reply.

"I'm on a mission..."
You're welcome. I've been looking for a website where I can start entering notes about casinos I'm visiting and only yesterday thought to look for a Wiki; this site is perfect!
Last summer, I decided to try to visit every card club in California, play in it, and get a souvenir chip. I've made a good start, but have only done about 25 clubs so far. Still, I've gathered a lot of info about the ones I'm visiting and I was starting to think about maybe hosting a web page of my own or something -- this is much better. I like the collaborative aspect, so others can update or correct my impressions after I put them in.
I'm thinking about trying to put together a map of California with each club indicated on it, so you can get an idea of where, physically, each club is. I'm not sure I'm graphic-savvy enough to manage it, though...
- Beautiful -- I love your ideas for the California material. If you think to take digital photos of the cardrooms and /or their chips, that would be very nice -- we need better visual content IMO. Thanks so much for your contributions! Several people have already added stuff here-and-there on Cali, but I'm thrilled to have a consistent contributor focused on the West Coast. (Sheridan is in the Midwest and I'm in the East.)
- PS: I may be able to help with the map idea. We could probably make a clickable HTML map or something. My work colleague made this map: http://blankinstructor.com/ski.html (off-topic, I'm spamming for our client I guess); I could find out more about how he did it but I don't think it was hard. Lemme think about how best to do this. - PhilipR 20:18, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with Philip on all of this. I live in Chicago, and I rarely get to California, so I haven't been able to cover much of that. I usually play in Vegas, so I can cover that. Do you post at 2+2 at all, Mark? SheridanCat 03:13, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
- No, I'm still somewhat a newbie (only been playing poker for a year and a half now), and am still sort of shy about posting on topics about the game itself. Card rooms, I can visit and rate, but the commentary on the game still kind of intimidates me a bit. Unrelated: how are you guys doing that neat signature thing with date/timestamps on these message posts? I can fake it (like I am here), but only with some effort...
- (Incidentally, when I visited Hawaiian Gardens a few weeks back, I did so specifically because it was only two miles from Portillo's Hot Dogs -- the only Portillo's outside Chicagoland. Yum!)
MarkT 03:28, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
- To get the timestamp thing, just type four tildes (~) in a row. I do love Portillo's. I haven't been there in awhile, but I used to work about 5 minutes from one - that's just too close for me. SheridanCat 05:47, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for catching that Empress mistake, Mark. SheridanCat 04:21, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
No trouble - that's what a Wiki is for! :-) MarkT 04:41, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
Admin privs
Mark, I just made you an admin. AFAICT the most important privs that involves are things related to spam control, e.g. now you can revert a page with one click rather than having to edit the old version and resave it. You can also block IP addresses of spammers, lock pages, and maybe some other functions I'm forgetting.
Thanks so much for your great work! The nice thing about a project like this is reaching a critical mass so that it's not just dependent on one or two people's stamina or energy level. :) At any rate, I'm really excited you're so involved.
cheers, PhilipR 14:57, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, Philip! I'm honored. This wiki is just great!
- MarkT 06:26, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
- I'm glad you're enjoying it, and really glad that you've been so involved. When i first started this project, i hoped that others would get as excited about the possibilities as i was. One of my major weaknesses is running out of steam to implement some of the ideas i come up with. First with Troy, and now with you, i feel like we're building a great team that can sort of help me compensate for that personality flaw. :-)
- Thanks again, PhilipR 15:48, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
I'm with Philip on this. I love having someone on board with such enthusiasm and so much information to share. SheridanCat 16:55, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
New Home Page
I'm playing around with a few notions of how to rearrange the home page, to be both more inviting and more navigatable. Since this is going to take some time and discussion, I'm starting a separate page called the New Home Page, where I'm working on the design. Once we get it the way we like, I'll swap in the contents of it into the real Main Page, and delete the New Home Page entirely.
Let me know what you think about the New Home Page on its Talk page - or, of course, Be Bold and whack at it as you like.
MarkT 00:40, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
You know what? After spending the day redesigning the home page, I really like what I ended up with. So I've gone ahead and unilaterally changed the main page. Since, as you've noted before, this is a wiki; it's easy for you guys to edit or revert my change as needed. So I decided to Be Bold and just do it.
I'll leave the original version up at New Home Page for a while, in case you want to revert the main page, so we can whack at it in the background.
Mmm - graphic goodness! Yum! :-)

Google Earth files
I haven't really played with GE (about to have my geek license revoked) beyond the usual gawking and all, but this uploading a file thing sounds very cool. So if the format is ZIPped XML, i.e. binary, I thought you could upload non-textual stuff the same as an image, but I admit that I haven't really played with that much on MediaWiki. I'll let you know if I find any way to do it, though -- it sounds like it would be great to distribute that way. Thanks, PhilipR 02:32, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Chip images
You probably watch the Recent changes anyway, but in case you don't, I'm going to post a news item and a question on Talk:Chip images very much directed at you (but placed there for the benefit of the public). -- PhilipR 06:41, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
Win-River
Dear Mark:
I just added an update for Win-River Casino(in Redding), but it's not formated very well. Could you help me? Thanks a lot!!
-- Pekarinn2
- I threw a little formatting in. SheridanCat 00:20, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
- MarkT 02:08, 8 November 2006 (UTC) Thanks, Pekarinn: I added the little QuickCasino box, but your trip report was already looking great - thanks for the info! I really appreciate it. I'm looking forward to getting up to that part of the state some day (maybe next year!).
New section: FTP Mods
I'm posting this here because I think you're the mod of Poker.Wikia.
I think it would be a good idea to move the FTP Mods from the 120-post thread in the Software section on 2+2 and into its own section.
I created Full Tilt Poker Mods and we moved some of the mods there already. However, the table images get scaled down when you click on them, and I think it can only be changed by the Wikia admin. For example: Image:Everlong-Sunburst.jpg gets scaled down and has that "Image in higher resolution" link below it, which might confuse some visitors and get them to use the wrong image. Can you change the settings to allow for larger sized images?
Spam on front page
Mark,
I'm glad you're still involved here. I hardly ever visit. However, I noticed what appeared to be acute spam recently added on the front page, attempting to change the name of the wiki to include the name of another site that I'm sure wants Google points from here. I'll try to keep an eye on it but I figured I should alert you too. Regards, PhilipR 20:56, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
Active users
Just wondering how many there are, it seems pretty much vacant. If there is a proper community, then I'll do some asking around before I start making pages, to see what the people want. Serenity1137 21:12, 25 July 2009 (UTC)
- There's a few of us hanging around. I'm fairly active, by and large, stopping by at least a few times every week (and sometimes a few times a day, when I'm particularly active). You happen to have caught me during a vacation, and I've just gotten back, so that's why it took four or five days to get back to you here.
- There's at least one other fairly active user who comes by once a week or so, and then of course a random smattering of others, many anonymous. Feel free to add or modify any pages you like - nothing in particular jumps out at me as "really in need of additions", but perhaps it does to you. If you want to ask me about something, feel free (I'll be stopping by every day or two now, since I have a bunch of data about cardrooms to type in from my vacation). And welcome to the PokerWiki!

A favour to ask
Once again not sure how large this community, and so am not sure how appropriate this is as a request but the wiki I am from has a far nicer standard table, and I was wondering if I could convince a Bureaucrat to add the necessary script to MediaWiki:Common.css. I know I'm only new but it does make the data in a table easier to read, and the current standard bad enough that I don't think visitors to the wiki would really be able to use any of the tables I'm busy making.
--Serenity1137 22:07, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
P.S. Sorry if you're not the person to take this request to, I couldn't find any outlet for admin requests.
P.P.S. Here is the script that would need to be added to make the tables all fanciful
/* Wikitable/Prettytable class for skinning normal tables. */
table.wikitable,
table.prettytable {
margin: 1em 1em 1em 0;
background: #F9F9F9;
border: 1px #aaa solid;
border-collapse: collapse;
color: black;
}
table.wikitable th, table.wikitable td,
table.prettytable th, table.prettytable td {
border: 1px #aaa solid;
padding: 0.2em;
}
table.wikitable th,
table.prettytable th {
background: #F2F2F2;
text-align: center;
color: black;
}
table.wikitable caption,
table.prettytable caption {
margin-left: inherit;
margin-right: inherit;
font-weight: bold;
}
- Done! MarkT 01:10, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Dear MarkT,
I am curious why you reverted my changes regarding Phil Hellmuth. There is currently a UB free-roll (set for 9/16/2009) that requires his middle name as the password and many players at UB are having difficulty finding it. If I posted the link to PokerWiki on the Twitter/Ultimate_Bet board, it would give your site additional exposure to poker players while providing the UB players with Phil's middle name, so that they could participate in the tournament.
I just joined here today, so if I'm doing something wrong, could someone please explain.
His middle name is Jerome and his suffix is Jr. The information is correct or was.
Sincerely,
Bill Coviello BillC561@optimum.net

Mark- red hawk casino in Placerville has opened a poker room. I've played twice, and would be happy to start a review page. I am not that computer savvy, and would need help getting it started DaveDHC 07:32, December 5, 2009 (UTC)
The similarities are interesting
Hi MarkT,
Allow me to introduce myself. On this Wikia site I have tagged my name as MisoSouper as one of the authors of Capitol Casino in Sacramento. I actually live in San Jose (next to you =]) but I work in the Sacramento area on the weekdays as a software developer. I grew up learning poker through No Limit tournaments with my high school friends back in '05. Now that I'm over 21 I've been playing at Capitol Casino but mostly Bay101, mainly grinding the 6/12 limit game on the weekends. Who knows, maybe we might have met at the poker table already.
I was reading your biography since I seen your name around a lot of pages because I thought, wow, this guy must play a lot of poker around California. You also are a software engineer or something in that area, and you are focusing your game mainly on 6/12 and planning to move to 8/16 and 20/40. I'm very surprised because all of those things is pretty much what I'm doing now and what my goals are too. I just wanted to get to know you, we probably both play at Bay101 on the weekends so maybe we can talk about poker or something if we ever see each other there.
I've also played the Limit tournament on Sundays at 9 at Bay101. It's pretty fun if you're a limit player and you haven't tried it yet. I think I've cashed in that tourney maybe 3-4 times already.
Anyway, hope to hear from you. My "spam" email is splakavellie@gmail.com
Best of luck, JV MisoSouper 00:46, December 8, 2009 (UTC)MisoSouper
This wiki
Hello, My name is L.M. Hopfner and I'm the founder and owner of the world's most containing poker lexicon donkpedia.org. Donkpedia is German languaged and we were thinking about founding a English language lexicon to reach more users. Now, what I want to offer you, is a server and a domain for free. The only condition for you would be to rename your wiki to Donkpedia. Since Donkpedia is completely independent and has an, what I consider, excellent reputation, I strongly believe that a movement of your page to an independent server is an idea on which both parties would profit.
You can reach me at nintendere@gmail.com. Kind regards,
Lukas M. Hopfner (88.117.29.100 12:26, February 6, 2010 (UTC))
Move to PokerW.com
Hi Mark. This Wiki will soon be deleted other than page titles and the content moved to PokerW.com. There it will be operated exactly the same. Same Creative Commons license, anybody can edit it and anybody who is admin/sysops here is welcome to take that same role there. I guess the only changes will be we wont be on the wikia.com domain and we will have much less advertising (probably none for awhile). I'd be open to any feedback or ideas you have - you can reach me at william@pokerw.com Cheers Pokers 03:24, February 16, 2010 (UTC)
- What? Why? You're deleting all my content? How do I get a backup of it before it gets deleted? I don't get it - who are you, and why are you deleting the wiki? MarkT 09:28, February 16, 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Mark. Nobody is ticked off and I'm not the one deleting the Wiki - it will be done by Wikia. We have signed a contract whereby all of the content from this Wiki will be moved to pokerw.com - most of it already has been. Your user page is here. Your hard work has not been deleted it has just been moved. You are free to continue adding to it there and I'd be glad to make you an Admin/Sysops of pokerw.com. You can reach me at william@pokerw.com with any questions or feedback. Pokers 13:47, February 19, 2010 (UTC)
- Hi, that’s not quite accurate, we have agreed to remove content from poker.wikia.com. However, because the content is available under creative commons, we still provide a full copy of the content to anyone who requests it. All your work is totally safe and can be restored to any new wiki. Pokers is setting up a new wiki at the address above, and you are welcome to join him there or to start a new wiki of your own with the same database backup. -- sannse<staff /> (talk) 22:08, February 23, 2010 (UTC)
Content
Hi Mark,
Is your content still live anywhere online, or could you send me a copy?
Thanks
- MarkT 05:49, January 1, 2011 (UTC) Hi, yes, I started a new wiki at http://pocketaces.wikia.com and it has all my old content as well as the new stuff. Thanks for asking!
